Director, WCUH Herbarium<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

I specialize in flowering plant systematics, which seeks to explain patterns of diversity <\/span>and understand species relationships and boundaries<\/span>. I mainly study problems in the taxonomy, biogeography, and evolutionary relationships of southeastern and southern Appalachian plant groups. <\/span>W<\/span>ork<\/span> in progress with MS students<\/span> includes <\/span>biodiversity of high-elevation rock outcrops, systematics<\/span> of <\/span>bush honeysuckle (<\/span><\/span>Diervilla<\/span><\/span>) and <\/span>hybridization in the<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Trillium <\/span>erectum\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span>complex.<\/span>\u00a0Recent publications with graduate students include <\/span>phylogeography<\/span> of sand myrtle (<\/span><\/span>Kalmia <\/span>buxifolia<\/span><\/span>), and systematics of Southern Appalachian saxifrages (<\/span><\/span>Micranthes<\/span><\/span>). <\/span>Our research tools include field work, herbarium studies, molecular phylogenetics of DNA sequences, and DNA fragment analysis.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am utilizing molecular and morphological methods to study the taxonomy of the species within the genus Robinia (<\/em>commonly referred to as locusts) in the Southern Appalachians. This research is emphasizing the phylogeny and conservation of two rare species in our region: R. viscosa<\/em> (Clammy Locust) and R. hartwigii\u00a0<\/em>(Hartweg’s Clammy Locust).\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
